THE ERIN DAVIS SHOW
Welcome to the Erin Davis show where we talk all things money, mindset and confidence. I know that being in control of your money means that you can step into the rest of your life with confidence, because everything starts with confidence. But I also know that women carry a huge, invisible mental load when it comes to their money. Being an accountant for over 30 years, I know all the ins and outs when it comes to money, and just how heavy that emotional load can be. So while I love talking about money, for me, it goes so much deeper. While I want you to explore your relationship with money, I also want to show you how embracing connection, expansion and abundance will make you feel more centered, inspired and aligned. So are you ready? Let's get started.
Welcome to the Erin Davis show. But before we get started today, I just want to share quickly about the Planning Day, which is happening on the 5th of December, which is rolling around very, very quickly. Now, the idea with the Planning Day is for those women in business to get really clear on what it is that they need to focus on for the next 90 days. It's easy to try and do everything, and you end up really doing nothing. You feel like you are overwhelmed, stressed out. You have so many ideas running around in your head, but actually just knuckling down and getting things done is really, really hard, unless you have that clear focus and direction on what it is that you need to direct your attention to. So the Planning Day will save you time. It will save you money, because it allows you to slow down focus and get very, very clear on what it is that you need to just concentrate on for the next 90 days. Again, we are at the beautiful Carrington house in Newcastle, it is the most divine space where you walk in and you feel like you are immediately on holidays, which is just perfect when you need to slow down, quieten yourself down, and really just tune into what it is that you want from your business going forward. Spaces are limited because I like to keep them nice and intimate, because that then allows you to have beautiful conversations, collaborations, be vulnerable if you need to, because it can be quite lonely and it can be quite scary being in business by yourself. So the idea about these planning days is to get clear for you, but also bounce ideas off the other women in the room. And the last Planning Day was very much like that. It was conversational, very relaxed, very in tune with just connecting to what it is that you want from your business going forward. So I really hope that you will join us. And as I said, Spaces are limited. So this is something you want to do. I would jump on it very, very quickly.
But for today's episode, I want to talk about Black Friday sales. Cyber Monday. We're coming up to Christmas, so there'll be Boxing Day sales happening. And I have really noticed just so much hype around Black Friday and all of these sales that I think it's really important to take a step back and acknowledge what it is that is actually happening, and then prepare yourself so that you can get the most out of these sales, if that's what you want to do, without feeling the stress and the overwhelm and the out of control feeling which a lot of us do feel.
Now, I have to admit that Black Friday in the past for me, really hasn't meant anything. I really haven't thought about it until it was too late, so then I got completely overwhelmed, and really had no clue where to start, so I just didn't end up doing anything. I have always said, oh, I'll be better prepared next year. I will get my Christmas shopping done, I will get myself organised. But it never seemed to happen, and I Black Friday would just creep up on me, and all of a sudden I'd know it was here, and then that overwhelming feeling was just so big that it caused me to really freeze and do nothing. This year is going to be a little different for me. I have a plan. I know what I want to buy. I have put my Christmas lists out early for friends and family who I buy for to let me know what they would like. So I am going into this Friday sale when Black Friday happens, and then so. For Monday with a plan, because it's very easy to get overwhelmed.
So you know, marketers out there and businesses out there are all trying to stand out from the crowd. They are all trying to grab your attention, and we know that we are faced with or exposed to so many ads throughout the day, like 1000s of ads, we are getting bombarded with ads everywhere, everywhere we look, social media, the television, the radio, billboards, busses, every single way we turn there is an ad for something, and we all know that Google listens to what we say. So those ads are very targeted and very specific as to what we've been clicking on, what we've been looking at, what we've been talking about.
So when you start to become aware of what it is that the marketers are doing, and then also tune into your buying psychology. It makes for the process to be a lot smoother and a lot simpler. So be aware with these Black Friday, Cyber Monday Boxing Day sales, whatever it is that there are already sales happening now. People will do a pre Black Friday sale or a pre Cyber Monday sale because they want to beat the crowd. They want you to spend your hard earned money with them. So they are looking for new and creative ways to get in first, and one of those ways is to do an early sale. Now they also businesses are doing tiered sales, so black friday may actually go from Thursday through to maybe Monday, and each day, early on, the sales are huge, and you may get a lot of value and a lot of extra things, but then each day, as the sale moves towards the end, something drops off, so they want you to buy now, which creates The urgency, which creates that fear of missing out, and that is why you are getting bombarded with, you know, buy this now, and you get all these extra things tomorrow, this one drops off, and then the next day, this one drops off.
So they are really trying to tune into that scarcity mindset and that scarcity feeling that we have, that we really need to buy now. It's very urgent. We need to get in now. So it's it's really important to be aware of what these things are, so that you can outsmart them, know what's coming, and then choose how it is that you spend your money, you will start to also get a huge amount of emails coming into your impact inbox with all of the hype and the excitement around these sales. Again, it is promoting that scarcity mindset. It is promoting that emotional connection with things that you think that you want, whereas, you know, you really need to tune into that. A lot of the sales also have add ons.
So you buy this and you get this free, or you buy this and this part is discounted. So those are, you know, the way that marketers do it. There is a very clear strategy behind Black Friday sales. And as a consumer, it's important for us to recognize what those strategies are, so that we can minimise our chaos and our overspending. So some traps for you as the consumer. And now, I think it is really important as both business owners and consumers that we work out what is best for us and tune into how this spending and how this season really makes us feel. Now, with all spending, there is an emotional connection. And I have spoken before that if managing your money was easy, it would be we prepare a budget, and we stick to the budget, and we would have, we would have total control of our money. We would make the money, but then we would have the money in our bank account, we would be making the money but and then reaching our goals. But instead, we make the money, but we don't have money in the bank. We make the money, but we're not reaching our goals. So there is this emotional connection to money and the way that we spend it. So we want to empower ourselves to be able to be in control of our money, and the first way to do that is really recognizing the emotional connection that you have to spending this money.
Really know why it is that you want to spend it and remove the emotion. I would suggest maybe preparing a list now have a very clear budget of what it is that you want to spend, but then also write that list and only buy things that are on that list anyways, because if you are going to buy it, whether it was on sale or not part of this process, then you have already made that determination and that emotional separation from your money because you are committed to buying this item, so remove the emotion. Start shopping now. Put things into your cart, but be really disciplined. Don't go and press the button just to buy it now, but put things in the shopping cart when you're online, find the things that you want and be very discerning about it. You know, take some time to think about it. Have these things sitting in your cart for a while, so that when the Black Friday, Cyber Monday, whatever the sale comes along, you then know that this is really what you want to purchase. You're not purchasing out of urgency or that scarcity mindset.
You have actually really thought about what it is that you want, made the emotional disconnect between the money and the item that you're purchasing so that it's just a transaction. There is no emotional connection to it there. So be very careful about that scarcity mindset and missing out when you are doing these or when you are looking online. Go with your list. Set a very clear budget and remove the emotion. You can also start to unsubscribe from emails you are going to be inundated with so many emails coming up to these sales that if you start to unsubscribe now, then you are going to have less in your inbox, which then means less temptation, which means less distraction, and it also means less emotional fear or lack, because, remember, advertisers are trying to sell us an outcome. They want us to feel something different, and it usually comes from a space of lack.
We don't think we're pretty enough, or we need this item to look better, or we need to buy this new course because we're not very good at our business, or we're lacking in our marketing, so we need to buy this course. Or we need to go on a diet because we're feeling overweight, and we need to get ready for Christmas and the summer season, or we need to buy this gym membership because we struggle to do it on our own. It all comes from this lack mentality and not enoughness. So when you are able to recognize what heartstrings the marketers and businesses are attaching to then you can start to make some very clear decisions about, well, is this what I really want, or is this just the emotional connection and they're pulling on that? And again, it is. It is totally fine for you to spend your money. I'm not saying don't spend it, but what I am saying is, know what, why you're buying it. Have a good reason for it. Don't just buy it because of the emotional connection.
You know, I know, for me, I am an emotional eater, and if something happens, my first go is to eat something that I know I shouldn't. I eat it, and then I feel bad about it. And there are emotional spenders. Same thing, something happens. Maybe it's bad, maybe it's good. A way to make you feel better or to celebrate is to spend money or to buy something. We have this instant gratification that we immediately feel better, but then we don't, we then feel guilty, because for me, I have eaten something that I really know I shouldn't, and it's against. It's putting me back against the goals that I want. It's maybe spending money that you don't have. It's increasing your credit card debt that you're trying to reduce. So then you start in this cycle of avoidance and shame and guilt, where, whereas we don't want that, we want our purchases to be very strategic and aligned to our goals. Another thing you need to watch for is overspending, particularly in these sales. All the time, you know the businesses are trying to suck you in to spend more money. It's very easy to just put a few extra things in your shopping cart, and before you know it, you are spending way more than you anticipated. It comes back to setting a very clear budget, buying things just on your list, but remember to not get caught up in the overspending space, caught up in the hype, caught up in the chaos and the pressure to act quickly, because that is what these businesses are banking on. They are counting on you getting caught up and just spending so watch for the minimum spend purchases.
Watch for the deals of the hour. Watch for those add ons, and just also watch for you know you need to spend $30 more to get free shipping. Free shipping is great if that extra $30 is for something that you wanted, maybe paying the $5 shipping is a better option than spending an extra $30 it's about making you in control of how you're spending money, rather than being manipulated and dictated To by these very clever thing, clever marketing strategies. So remember that these businesses are wanting to stand out from the crowd. They are going to try and do everything they can to get your hard earned dollars. And it's up to us as consumers to be empowered and in control of our money. It's up to us to decide what it is that we want. You know, we have big financial goals, not just one goal, but goals. And is spending money on these Black Friday sales in alignment with your goals. And now there can be some super special deals and super hot deals that are too good to pass up. And by all means, jump on these, because if you are going to spend the money anyway, why not spend it now and get a discount and be prepared rather than rushing out, particularly around this time of the year, where we're all thinking about Christmas presents, and, you know, the festive season, rather than waiting until the last minute.
If there is something that you are going to buy anyway, and it is on sale in these sales, then now is a perfect opportunity and a perfect time to buy them, but make sure you are the one that's in control. You need to determine how it is that you spend your money, rather than just allowing for these businesses to determine it. So it comes back to, what are your financial goals? What is that five year roadmap that you have to be able to create financial freedom? And now financial freedom, freedom for everybody looks different, and that's okay, and you don't have to have millions of dollars to be financially free, but you do need to be able to be in control of your money. And that being in control is being totally aware of these marketing tactics that businesses are using to be able to get you in to buy.
Now, if you're a business, you are going to be thinking about these strategies, and it's important that you determine how you do it in a way that feels authentic to you and your business. How does it create that beautiful community and connection with your clients and customers? And how is it that you can showcase your products and services to your ideal clients in a way that feels good for you? Again? Remember, everything we do needs to be in alignment with our values, and this is when we are buying and selling. So the work that I do is around supporting women to become financially free. They create financial freedom in a way that feels aligned to them, through holding them accountable, through creating a five year roadmap and implementing that game plan. It's about, how do we create the game plan that feels in alignment, that then achieves the goals that you want, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Boxing Day sales. You know, they could be a new, endless supply of sales. It all comes back to the same thing. Set a very clear budget. Write a list. Only buy the things that are on the list anyway. Remove.
If the emotion that's attached to those purchases shop now and leave things sitting in your cart for a while so that you can then think about it, feel into it. Does it feel right? Is it the right thing for you to do? If it is great, go ahead and do it. If it's not, then maybe, you know, those few days waiting, that instant gratification that you were looking for disappears and you really decide that it isn't for you. Now this is what it is with taking control of your money. When you take control of your money, you are then able to step into the rest of your life with confidence, and confidence means making decisions that feel good, they feel aligned, and they bring you closer to that goal of financial freedom and independence. Instead of being caught up in all the hype and the chaos and the pressure to act quickly, spend now but then it results in you feeling overwhelmed and stressed and out of control. So if this resonates, let me know. I hope that you find some bargains in these Black Friday sales, but they are bargains which you know are true bargains and that they sit and feel really well with you. I don't want you to come on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, next week or next month when the credit card bill arrives and you are what the hell did I just do? We want to avoid that. We want to stop that overspending, and we want to stop the guilt and the cycle of avoidance and shame around our spending. So this cyber Friday, or what is it, Cyber Monday, Black Friday, take control. Really take control. Take the ownership and make the decisions that you know are right for you. So happy spending I hope it feels good for you. If you struggle in this area, then let me know, because, as you know, this is the space that I love to play in.
