THE ERIN DAVIS SHOW
Welcome to the Erin Davis show where we talk all things money, mindset and confidence. I know that being in control of your money means that you can step into the rest of your life with confidence, because everything starts with confidence. But I also know that women carry a huge, invisible mental load when it comes to their money. Being an accountant for over 30 years, I know all the ins and outs when it comes to money, and just how heavy that emotional load can be. So while I love talking about money, for me, it goes so much deeper. While I want you to explore your relationship with money, I also want to show you how embracing connection, expansion and abundance will make you feel more centered, inspired and aligned. So are you ready? Let's get started.
Today's episode is all about confidence and what you need to do to be able to skyrocket your confidence and move your business forward in a way that feels both aligned and energises you. Now, confidence is something that I think gets thrown around and we don't really know what it is, or we just put this blanket thing that we want more confidence. But what I want to share today is What does confidence actually looks like. Because I think the more you get clear on what it actually looks like and how you can improve it, the more you can actually achieve it. And I know that confidence comes from trying.
It comes from moving through those struggles which provide the learning opportunities for you, because we don't build confidence when things are going well. Let me say that again, we don't build confidence when things are going well, we build confidence when we are struggling, when we're able to do the hard things and come out the other side. Those struggles provide us with the opportunity to learn and encourage us to build resilience, because practice doesn't make perfect. You don't just do something and stay in that confidence space.
You are either working towards it or you're moving away from it. So we don't get to keep our confidence. Confidence comes from doing those scary things, and it comes from doing the hard things. And as I said, we don't get to keep our confidence. We need to be able to keep showing up and keep building towards what we want. We're either creating confidence or we're avoiding it, and we're taking steps to avoid the things that we want to do, which then means we're losing our confidence. So confidence is about continuously showing up. It's our willingness to turn up and keep practising. From that practice, we're then able to build confidence. And now practice doesn't make perfect. Practice prepares you to keep showing up even when things are tough or uncomfortable, and they allow you to keep moving forward.
So as I said, confidence doesn't come when things are going well, if you stay in that comfortable space, you're not growing and you're not building confidence. Confidence instead comes when we are pushing through where we're learning from our struggles. We're doing something which feels uncomfortable, and I know that when you have confidence, I think Mel Robbins said it, confidence is built through the fire. It is built when you are in that struggling street. And you can't create confidence when you are in the avoidance mode, and so if we bring this back to our business, I want to ask you, what is it that you are avoiding in your business at the moment?
What is it that you need to do more of that makes you more confident and builds that confidence with your money? What are you avoiding? Is it avoiding looking at your bank statements? Is it avoiding preparing a budget? Is it avoiding learning more about money and learning to feel comfortable with it? Or is it avoiding having savings in the bank and just. Ending everything as soon as it comes in. So the more you avoid something, the deeper we go into that hole of losing confidence. And I see this a lot with women in business, in particular and particularly around their money, that they don't have the confidence they stay in that space of thinking they don't understand.
There's a lot of shame and a lot of avoidance around dealing with their money and learning about money, which then keeps them in this cycle of not wanting to learn or not knowing how to learn. We end up losing the confidence. We give up and we stop avoiding it. Keeps showing up, and we keep pushing those tasks aside that we know that we should do to be able to improve our confidence, and we end up becoming overwhelmed and confused, which means then we stop and we quit, and then we're hard on ourselves because we're not actually doing the thing that we want to do. So I want you to ask yourself some questions, what is it that you are actually avoiding at the moment in your business? And I want you to respect yourself enough to just keep turning up. I want you to think about what are the behaviors and activities that I need to do in order to keep showing up? How do I want to feel? Who is the person that I want to be and I want to? I want you to practise keeping that commitment to yourself that you've made, that you want to do better, or you want to do more.
You know, a lot of people say that they want more confidence, or they want to build confidence, but the way to build the confidence is doing the hard things. It is learning what you need to do through those struggles. And competence builds confidence. So the more we do things, the more competent we become, the more confident we become. So I'll say that again, competence breeds confidence. The more you do something, the better you're going to get at it, the more your confidence is going to grow. So I want this, this episode is really about building confidence, and confidence underpins everything that we do, and I think that we sometimes take it for granted that we'll just do it once, and we should know what we're doing, and we have that expectation on ourselves that we we need to know what we're doing, and we can't have that fear of judgement or we stop doing things because we're overwhelmed and we we don't want to put ourselves out there. I want you to get rid of those thoughts, and I want you to remove yourself from the outcome and the emotion and just do the thing.
Just be willing to turn up and keep going, keep practising, because the practice builds the confidence you know, have a look at what it is in your business all your life that you need to do more of. Do you need to be speaking your mind more? Do you need to look at your bank account? Do you need to improve your financial literacy? Do you need to have those conversations? Do you need to be putting yourself out there more and just getting on with it? And so I really think that confidence gives us the opportunity to build better, to be better. And we all have losing seasons. We all are on that ebb and flow of things going up and things go down, but it's really our resilience and our ability to keep moving forward which is the most important thing. And when you have those and you keep showing up for yourself, you keep moving forward, you will build the confidence, and the confidence will come. And I think that that is really the most important thing.
So let me know what you think. Is there something in your world, in your business, around your money, around anything where you need more confidence? I know in the past, for me, I have struggled with putting myself out there, and I have worried about what people think, and I have also made some really bad money mistakes. Though, the more work I do, and the more I keep showing up, the easier things become, and I'm able to forgive myself for the mistakes that I have made along the way, and see them as learning opportunities. I can't change what's happened in the past, but I can work towards creating the future that I want, and that future comes from having the confidence within myself to be able to do things that feel uncomfortable. Challenging that I know is going to move me forward and put me in the place where I want to be. And so if you don't have imposter syndrome and you are not feeling uncomfortable and you are not feeling out of your depth, then you're not growing and you're not moving forward, you're in that comfortable zone, and like I said earlier, you're either working towards building confidence, you're creating it, or you're avoiding it. You're taking steps to avoid things, and therefore losing your confidence.
Confidence comes from trying, it comes from turning up. It comes from practising so that you keep going even when it's hard. We move through the struggles, and we learn, and we build confidence when things are not going well. We build them to become a better version of yourself, and you don't become a better version of yourself when you're in that comfortable zone and where everything is just at the status quo, we're actually going backwards. And so I want you to think about the steps that you need to take in order to grow that confidence, in order to move forward and in order to feel more in control and more confident.
