THE ERIN DAVIS SHOW
It's almost no financial year here. And it is a perfect time to look at where your finances are for the last financial year. But then also take some time out to really have a look at where you want to go for the next financial year. It is the perfect time to sit and reflect. But then also really step forward and start to plan what it is that you want your finances to look like, in the coming financial year. So the work that I do with my clients is really getting very clear on what it is that they want going forward. We look at the clarity, the direction and structure, their finances, so they feel financially confident and financially well and financially independent. So that is the work that I do with my clients. And leading up to the end of the financial year is the perfect time to get in and get that done. So if you are ready to take control of your finances and become financially independent. Let me know, send me a message and contact me because this is, as I said, the perfect time to really step into controlling your finances and becoming super confident with what it is that you want, and how you want to achieve it.
So welcome to episode 5 of the Erin Davis Show. This week has been such a ride. I launched my podcast over the weekend with an amazing launch party, which was just such a beautiful event with my friends and family. We were all there celebrating in the most beautiful location, we had a grazing platter, I had a photographer there, and we hired a beautiful Airbnb. And it really just was such a lovely coming together of all of the people who have helped me and supported me throughout this process.
And I think it's really important that we pause and take notice of the achievements that we've made so far. Because we get so caught up in the day to day that it gets very, very much like Groundhog Day, just day after day, day after day. And we forget just how far we have actually come until we actually pause and stop and reflect. So over the weekend, it was that, that's what I did. I stopped and I paused and I reflected that the lead up to launching the podcast was a very big stressful moment. For anybody that has created a podcast or done anything like that, it's a really big job and to be able to learn something new, completely new that I have never done before. Putting it all together, making it all work, making the tech work. And just to have it go out into the world was such a huge achievement. So to be able to celebrate, first of all that achievement with my friends and family, but then second of all to celebrate me putting myself out there and being vulnerable and being exposed and showing up to the world. I was really proud of myself. So Sunday was a really nice feeling. And it was a beautiful way to connect, and enjoy the time with my friends and family.
And that sort of leads me into what I want to talk about today, which is mindset. And I know there's a big buzz around mindset. There's a lot of people talking about it. And it's a really big buzzword. However I feel like mindset for me is really those underlying beliefs you have about yourself. It's how you see the world. It's how you react to different situations. It's what influences your ability to learn and grow. So the mindset that I needed to be able to have in order to put myself out there and release a podcast, first of all, even to just commit to doing it and then second of all, actually making it happen, the mindset needed to be really quite firm and strong in that I believed in myself. If you don't have those underlying beliefs, self beliefs, then it makes it really hard to put yourself out there and particularly in business or as women in these business roles. If you are not believing in yourself, it makes it really, really challenging to keep showing up when you're questioning yourself. While I had moments of self doubt, and really just didn't know what I was doing and why I was doing it, I lost sight of that a little bit, probably because of just how hard things were. I hadn't learned anything new for ever. I can't even really remember the last time I had to learn something new. I went to uni, I don't know, 30 years ago, to do my accounting degree and I had to learn stuff then. But since then, I really haven't had to learn anything new. I've just built on all of the information that I already had, and that I already knew. And just build on that and continue to build. But to actually learn something new from scratch has been really hard and really challenging. I've had to learn all the tech, I've built the website, I've built all the back end of the website, which is so intricate, and there's so many details and there's so many moving parts. If you're familiar with building a website, you would know that having to connect all the pieces and join all the dots together can be really hard. And it can be really frustrating, particularly when something doesn't work, it just impacts everything else. So there's a very set process as to how you do things to ensure that everything works and everything stays connected. So I had to learn all the website plus, I had to learn all the tech associated with a podcast, recording, editing, producing, uploading, like uploading was really challenging. And you would think that I'm a smart woman but I really struggled to figure out exactly how that needed to happen.
There is again, a process and a way that it needs to be. So my mindset was challenged and questioned as to what I was doing and why I was doing it, whether it was the right thing to do or not the right thing to do. And it really, I really needed to draw on that strength to be able to persevere through those challenges. Because it's easy to give up. And it's easy to say it's all too hard and just go back to the comfortable space of everything that I already know.
I know one thing's for sure that coming back into that space of comfortable or familiar is what has caused me to feel so unsettled and unfulfilled over the last few years. So I knew that I didn't want to go back to feeling that unfulfilled state or that unsatisfied state, I knew that I need to keep pushing, even though it's hard. And even though it's challenging, because I want something different. And if I kept reverting back to that old familiar way, then I would still be stuck in that day after day groundhog familiar place, which was feeling uncomfortable in its own way.
So my mindset really needed to be strong. And I really needed to keep coming back to what it is that I wanted to do. And there really wasn't any question in my mind of whether I couldn't do it or that I won't do it. Maybe there was something “I couldn't do it”. But there definitely wasn't that “I won't do it”. I never ever thought that I wouldn't do this. I did have lots of moments actually where I was thinking, No, I can't do it. And that keeps showing up regularly. However, having the support around me, particularly my business coach, really being that sounding board and being that person who believed in me, even if I doubted myself, was crucial in order to step through this uncomfortable space. And that's what I do for my clients in their financial wellness space. I know that a lot of women struggle with understanding their money and feeling a lot of shame and judgement around not knowing. I hold that space for them and I support them through it when it is challenging and when it is uncomfortable and when they’re learning something new. And so that was the same with me in this podcast.
As I said, I didn't know what I was doing. And it felt really hard. So I needed to be really kind to myself and I needed to be gentle. And I also needed to reflect on just how far I've come. And the achievements that I have made in order to get to where I am. So Sunday was a big celebration of that. And it all came together so beautifully. And, and I've been reflecting on it sense as to what has driven me to do this. And why I have stayed true to this reason or this purpose, even though it has been hard and challenging. And it comes back to what is it that I want to do? And what is it that lights me up? What's the thing that I know I'm called to do?
It's taken me a long time to get to this place because I was so caught up in the day to day, like I've said, that I really never ever stopped to think about what is it that I want? Or what is it that I need to learn in order to grow? I was just so busy trying to survive. And that was just because of, you know, the cycle of life that I was in, kids were young, I was managing a team, managing a client base, being a wife, being a friend, trying to do all the things yet, I felt like I wasn't doing anything very well at all. So I needed to really come back to finding where it was that I needed to be and what I needed to do.
I needed to be really kind to myself and become super self aware of what my mindset needed to be in order to step through that really uncomfortable space. And acknowledge that it's okay to feel scared and it's okay to feel worried. And it's okay not to know. But it's also okay to challenge yourself and push yourself into spaces where you haven't been before.
As you know, I like to trail run. I've completed 2, 50km Ultra Trail Australia marathons in the Blue Mountains. The mindset required in order to complete those marathons was, I just need to keep going. I really didn't even think that I couldn't do it. I know maybe that was silly. But my very first event I ever competed in was this Ultra Trail marathon 50 km in 2021. And I did it with a group of friends and they all finished way before me, they were a lot faster than me and I was the last one to finish. Though I never actually thought to myself, I can't do this, or I won't do it. Or I'm not going to finish. It never even entered my mind that I wouldn't finish. I just kept saying to myself, it's one foot in front of the other. It's just keep moving, just keep shuffling. And by the end of it, I could hardly walk. My knee was very, very sore. I've had a hip replacement, however, my hip was fine. But my knee was really bad. And I was shuffling and I don't even I don't even know why I was shuffling because by that stage I as I said I can hardly walk. So really what's the point of shuffling but I just kept moving and I just kept going. It was the most bitterly cold day. It was sleeting and raining and I was frozen. But I just remember talking to myself as I'm going down this eight kilometre hill in the Blue Mountains. Questioning why am I doing this? What, why am I even here? Because nobody was around. And I was just talking to myself.
But there was no point during that race did I say I'm stopping or I'm not going. I was going to get to the finish line no matter what. And it took perseverance and determination. And I feel like it's very similar to this podcast journey and this whole business journey that I've been on. The business journey that I see a lot of women on too. You've just gotta keep going. You've just got to make a decision that you're going to do it. And it can be messy. It can be clunky, it can be uncomfortable, and it can be really hard and challenging, but you just keep going.
And that's what I did. I just kept going, one foot in front of the other. And the mindset like I said that I needed to be able to do that was literally one foot in front of the other. Ii needed to just believe in myself that I could do it and I surrounded myself with like minded people. The running community is just such a beautiful community, they are all there wanting the same thing. Everybody cheers for you, you go around a corner, you have a name on your race bib. So everyone calls out your name and encourages you and supports you, and keeps you going. And in those moments, when you're feeling like you can't keep going, they're the people that push you. It's the motivation you need to keep going.
And I feel like that's the same in business. It can be really lonely, and it can be quite exhausting. Particularly when you're not understanding your money, and you're not understanding what you need to do. And you don't feel like you can just go and ask people, because that would be super embarrassing or you'd feel like a failure. Because that is the type of thing that you should know, or that you feel like you should know. So to be able to be that cheerleader for women, and support them through that phase of their business, or the season of their business is what I love to do. And I love to be able to work with women in changing their money mindset. From it's too expensive, or you get what you get, and you don't get upset, or I can't buy that unless it's on special, or I can't charge my worth. Because that really then takes away your choice and it takes away. It really makes you have to settle for what it is that you've got, rather than having the choice and the option to choose to do things differently, to charge more or to feel abundant or to feel in control. And that's what I like to work on.
I like to resolve that mindset. Because mindset is everything, had I not had the strong mindset of being able to complete that Ultra Trail marathon, I would have stopped. I would have given up. And I know that I would have been so disappointed in myself for giving up. Because that's not what I wanted. I didn't want to start the race and not finish. I had every intention when I stood at that start line that I was going to finish. And I did finish it was 11 hours and 7 minutes and 31 seconds later. But I did finish. And I want that for you too, I want you to know that you're going to get to the finish line, wherever that finish line is. You showed up at the start line, you started your business, you went into business for yourself for a reason. And to keep going and keep pushing through even when it is hard and when it's challenging. And I want you to keep going. But it's about having the cheerleader on the sideline and the support network around you. And finding those spaces where it is that you are challenged, and that you feel uncomfortable and that you feel like you're not lacking. But when you're feeling out of your depth, that's the most important time to reach out for help and to reach out to that support network around you. And I think when you have the mindset that you are able to do that, without the shame without the judgement, and just realise that everybody around you is wanting you to win, they're wanting to cheer you on, they're wanting you to win, they're wanting to support you. When you find that tribe and that group of people, it makes all the difference.
And look, I know that women are stretched, or we feel stretched that we can't possibly take on anything else and we can't possibly make room to slow down and have somebody else or something else step into our world. However, when you really take that step back and work on your business instead of in your business, everything changes. And the mindset piece that goes with that is the crucial element to be able to run a successful business.
So as I said, that's what I like to do for my clients. I like to really step into that mindset space and help them navigate through those limiting beliefs around themselves and also around money, how they feel about money, how they feel, the scarcity or the abundance, the not worthy or just anything, anything at all, because most of the time, they're those subconscious beliefs that we have that we don't really realise how they're impacting us.
So what I want you to take away from today is that mindset, even though it's a buzzword, it really is a crucial element to be able to run a business successfully. I also feel like it is crucial in order to run your life successfully. Irrespective of whether you're a business owner or not. To be able to run your life, feeling in control, feeling abundant, feeling calm and at peace with yourself, to feel like you have choice and control all comes from how you see yourself and how you react to different situations. It's your ability to learn and to grow and to influence the situation. And all of that comes back to mindset. So if you are struggling with your mindset, and you're needing some support and help, then head over to www.erindavis.com.au and check out what I have to offer there because, as I said, this is a space that I love to live in. So I hope this podcast resonates with you.
