Running Through Life's Challenges: My Journey to Financial Empowerment and Personal Growth
Jul 04, 2024For over 30 years, I've had a deep passion for money and helping women take charge of their finances. Yet, my journey is about much more than just numbers. 12 years ago, a fall led to hip problems and ultimately a hip replacement. The doctors told me I'd never run again, but that only fuelled my determination.
At that time, running wasn't really a big part of my life, but the idea of never doing it again was heart breaking. With my sister's support, I started running again. We formed a running group with a few other like-minded women and in this community I found the motivation and encouragement to keep going, even when it was tough.
Running became my sanctuary, a way to unwind and de-stress after long days at work or with the kids. There's something grounding about being in nature, feeling the wind and rain and I love watching the sunrise. In those quiet moments, just me and the trail, I find the clarity and inspiration which then allows me to be my best self.
Running has taught me invaluable lessons that I've applied to my business and life. When I completed my first 50km Ultra Trail marathon, I was the slowest in our running group, but quitting never crossed my mind. I just kept putting one foot in front of the other, talking to myself (I think I was a bit delusional at times!) and trusting I could do it. Crossing that finish line was one of the most emotional and rewarding experiences of my life.
The following year, I took on the challenge again, this time solo. I knew what to expect, felt stronger and more in control. I finished an hour earlier, despite being held up in a bottleneck for over an hour. Ultimately, it wasn’t about the time; it was about showing up and completing the challenge. As they say in running, "it’s finished lines, not finished times."
This lesson resonates in my business too. It’s not about perfection or being the best; it's about showing up consistently, taking action and believing in yourself - even when the path seems daunting and unachievable. I know that there will be more tough times ahead and if I want to keep riding the roller coaster. I need to make sure my confidence and support systems are strong and consistent.
That's why I love working with clients in the money and mindset space. I understand the uncertainty and self-doubt, but I also know the power of pushing through and achieving what you once thought was impossible. Whether it's growing a business, paying off debt or feeling more in control of your money, I'm there as the biggest cheerleader for my clients, guiding them every step of the way.
Just like running, it’s about taking one step at a time, improving by 1% each day and never giving up on your vision. When you finally reach that finish line, the sense of accomplishment and relief is unparalleled. That’s the kind of transformation I want for my clients to achieve.
